Question Time

Whilst I had reservations about Nick Griffin appearing on the BBC's question time last night, it was nice to see the Fascist being ripped apart by the rest of the panel and the audience. Total fail on the BNP's part in the end.

A Labour Politican Talking Sense

James Purnell speaks wise words in the Guardian today.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/jul/17/james-purnell-gordon-brown-reform

I particular:

He tells today's Guardian that:
• The government has failed to properly make the positive case for immigration and is "allergic" to a debate on the wisdom of faith schools.
• Labour should hold a referendum on
electoral reform at the next election.

Comepletly agree here. I really hope that the Labour party moves this way in thinking.

Negativity

I have no self esteem. I fear rejection. I feel negative alot more than when I feel posistive. I'm not really close to anyone. My life is at a dead end.

I like me. But I don't like where I am.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/8128482.stm

Labour MP is to step down at the next general election for personal reasons, it has been announced.
Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt, who has the smalles
t majority of any Kent Labour-held seat at 79, was elected in the 1997 landslide

See, it would be amsuing if he'd actually stated the real reason, which would involve him saying something like 'Labour are gonna get their asses handed to them on a plate at the next election and theirs no way in hell I wanna waste my time campaigning to hold onto a seta i'm blatantly gonna loose'.

Download 2009

Download 2009 motherfucker. My 7th Downbload (yup that means i've done all of them) and my 14th festival in all. Mike.

Right, awesome turn out for the Bath camp, was fucking huge, nice to see so many faces there. Mike.

BANDS. RAWK!
Friday
Streadlur - Ok
In This Moment - Meh
Sylosis - Good! First mosh of the weekend.
Killswitch Engage - Ok. Holy Diver really. Yeah.
Lacuna Coil - Good. Fucking good. Seen every Download perfromance by them and they never dissapoint. Sounded alot rawer live than they do on CD, which is really to their credit.
KoRn - FUCKING AWESOME. Really fucking awesome. 6th time i've seen them and I think the best! Really kick ass set list. I started a fair few pits including the big one on the left side for Blind (yes, Matt awarded me that. Win!)
Faith No More - pretty good. Knew a few songs but their one of those bands I really should get into but haven't yet. But yeah they were good.

Saturday
Ripper Owens - Good. Well I am a big Judas Preist fan and obviosuly their's that connection and I like that whole style.
Five Finger Death Punch - Good. They were good at Defenders in Bristol and probably a bit better here. Was in the mosh.
DEVILDRIVER - CIRCLE PIT, CIRCLE PIT, CIRCLE FUCKING PIT! Yes, Devildriver were awesome. Was in the pits and it fucking destroyed me. End Of The Line was probably the highlight!
Hatebreed - Fucking good. I was too beaten to mosh (though i tried and gave up) they they were really good, better than last time at Download as well.
Static X - Fucking good. Cold, Black + White and Push It = WIN!
Dragonforce - No. 4th time and why? So fed up of them.
Pendulum - Well iu didn't really watch Pendulum, I stayed at the back sitting down and scowling then discussing with John how much they suck. And they sucked hard.
Marilyn Manson - Dear Marilyn, why do make me cry? You were aweosme in 2007 at Birmingham. Why the poor show? Why the lack of all that cool stuff you used to do that made us go 'fuck yeah'. Ok, so Great Big White World was really good. But...just...why? :( I hate seeing my fave bands abort themselves on stage.
SLIPKNOT - FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Really fucking good show. I was so beaten still from Devildriver but I was still pitting. Really lost it during People = Shit after intial annoyance at myself for low energy levels. Better than Cardiff, so woot! And a kick ass set list.Afterwards I was just beaten and exaushted. Saturday = pit day.

Sunday
Stone Gods - Good. Fuck that Justin Hawkins guy, their on a winner here.
Trigger The Bloodhed - Good. Fair fucking play to the Bath boys their doing well!
Suicide Silence - FAIL.
God Forbid - Good, these guys deserve to be doing better.
Journey - Good. I think praising the qaulity of the vocals was a universally spoken thing afterwards.
Dream Theater - AWESOME. Really awesome. Really really awesome!
Steel Panther - Oh fuck yes! hey kicked ass! Big surprise of the weekend in that I suspected some good but this was brilliant. And the drop kick to the face before the start = wwwwwooooooooottttttt!!
69 Eyes - Didn't really do it for me.
Therapy? = Fuck yes. Really awesome! :D:D:D
Def Leppard - Much better than I thought they would be, good choice to end I think.

So top bands were:
1. KoRn
2. Slipknot
3. Devildriver
4. Dream Theater
5. Therapy?
6. Steel Panther
7. Lacuna Coil
8. Static X

Fuck yeah! Mike! Awesome weekend. Total win! Fuck yes.

The Gurkha thing

Been meaning to post this up since the commons vote, but yes well donr to the lib Dems for proposing the Gurkha thing...aka letting Gurkha who have served in the British army live in the UK. It's the morally right thing to do and it also is a smart move politically. Yes you read that right...a smart political move which is also the right thing to do!

Budget 2009

Well I could write a major long rant about the Budget and how Labour is fucked. But whats the point? Look at this way, it was inevitably going to be bad. The whole world is in a bad way at the moment and the UK is doing very poorly, the budget was never gonna make everyone smile. Every newspaper is basically laying into them, from the Daily Mail and the Telegraph through the Independent to the Morning Star. No surprises there then.

Instead let me just say this. The 50% top tax rate is something that should have been in place long ago. To put it simply, if you earn over £150,000, you are fucking rich. So paying 50% tax on earning OVER that amount isn't really a big deal in the sechem of things. The scheme of thigns being that if youw ant to continue being that rich you need people to make money from...and paying those taxes helps keep those people intellegent, healthy and more importantly (for you) spending their money!

So yeah, Labour suck, I think we all get that now. But a 50% top tax rate is the correct thing to do, even if it's come far too late and for the reasons.

Also intresting to note that they would never have done this if they were riding high in the polls. It takes masisve loomign election defeat for them to actually enact what should be a key policy of any real 'left-wing' government. Then again they left the left-wing to get thgemselves in power and drifted further form it whilst in power....makes sense they'd run back to mummy when teh power goes away.

America

I just can't seem to get as mad at the US of A as I used to. Anyone whose known me for a few years could tell you that I used to rather obsessive in regards to politics, and that I held a rather negative view of America. But the past coupel of years my view of them as eased somewhat. After the Democrats trounced the Republicans in the 2006 elections it was clear that change was a coming, and I actually quite like this Obama fellow whose Mr President now! Sure the Nov 2008 election brought out Americas nasty side....Palin is just pure evil in my eyes....but in the end Obama won and he's not your normal Conservative American, which is great and it shows a better side to the country.

Sure, I still resent all the redneck anti-gay types, the anti-abortion crowd and the religious nuts, not to mention general American apathy in regards to the rest of the world, and the damn right arroggance taht tehy display sometimes.....but just don't get as worked up as I used to, because after all there's finally a good guy in the White House!

Power Hungry

So the Tory party has stated recently that it might not be able to prevent a tax rise and cutting taxes seems unlikely. After reading an article in the Independent a couple days ago talking about how the Tories would do well to ditch their pledge to cut inheritance tax...a move that some in the party would be most dipleased at yet would do them well in public opinion....you now have Ken Clarke talking about doing exactly that whilst official party line stays the same.

Anyway point is that the Tories are in dilema. They aren't riding high in the polls because they are 'good' or because of their policies....they are riding high because everyone hate Labour and are reluctant (read:too stupid :p ) to turn to the Lib Dems. Realisation that the Tory ways of old (...anti-europe, tax cutting, working class hating, rich loving...you get the idea....) would result in disaste for the UK if they got into power with this current crisis is obviosuly leading to them becoming more like New Labour as thats how to get to power and not loose it straight away, which is ironic because New Labour got in by leaving the left and heading in the Tories direction.

Result: a slightly center right party which is meant to be left wing (Labour) and a right wing party moving to the center (the Tories).

This is just bad for the UK, it results in tabloid grabbing policies which i'd almost call reactionairy in the way it damages the progressive cause.

The only way we all might benifit is if we end up with a hung parliment and the Lib Dems get some significant power. The country has gone way too right wing on issues of drugs, social freedoms and civil liberties and the Tories won't reverse that.

I fear the Tories in power as well because they are by far the most isolationist out the 3 parties due to the simple factthat they don't get on with either Europe or America. At least with Labour they try to get along with Europe occasionally and with Blair gone and the Democrats in power some American loving isn't as bad as it was, and the Lib Dems are senisable in realsing that unity with Europe is the long term intrest of making sure the British people proper in the future, even at the expense of relations with any future Republican US administration (I think they'd be a sbit strained with the Democrats but not half as bad as the Tories).

To end this somewhat directionless rant my general concern is that the Tories are just gonna morph into a public face that is acceptable, get into power and be divided by struggles as there real face re-appears and we all rememeber why we hated them in the first place.

Oh yeah

After posting that blog about Gojira earlier I realised I forget to post one about when I went to saee Judas Priest/Megadeth/Testament in cardiff last month. So yeah..that was a great gig as well!

Gojira

GOJIRA were so very awesome last night at the Bristol o2 accedemy 2. Tiny little room packed full of sweaty bodies going mental when they came on. I was pretty much at the front (3rd row kinda deal with Kirk and Mike in front of me) and the band were right our faces which was awesome, and they fucking on form, sounded excellent, really heavy and really tight! Good setlist, didn't include some of my favourites but they've got so many good songs they were bound to miss some out! Stuff that I remember standing out (which was alot!) was Oberus, The Heaviest Matter in the Unviverese, Backbone, Flying Whales, From The Sky, A Sight To Behold, the Way Of All Flesh, the Art Of Dying...fuck it they were all really good! They seemed to really appreciate the audience as well, shaking everyones hands after etc which was cool. Fucking good gig!

Albums

(From Facebook...)

So a few of you have done the album note so time for me to have a go.

Gonna do it as 30 because there's just sooooo many.

Ok sort of a chronological order to this. I tried to remember the order i got them in but no doubt I got some the wrong way round. Oh and only 1 album per band....apart from Machine Head...cuz they get 2 for being so far apart in the timeline.

Oh most of the first ones were either bought at Replay or the cool one in the coridoor which I forget the name of (edit - cam tells me Onyx). Both now defunct.

1. Rage Against The Machine - Self Titled
This is the 1st album I ever bought, so it started off the trend really! I was 16 and discovering rock music, and this really set me off on this metaller direction :D
2. Nirvana - From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah
Yup, along with RATM they got me into this whole alternative thing! I think this was my brothers album as well...not even mine :O And I have no idea where it is now... Anyway it was live and so raw and awesome. They also made me wanna go and research the whole Seattle band thing, which leads to the next one....

3. Pearl Jam - VS
Ok so Nirvana was awesome but this album really set me off into the whole grunge scene.

4. Soundgarden - Superunkown
5. Alice In Chains - Facelift
Two awesome albums that basically cemented the fact I loved alternative music and this lifestyle was the one for me.

6. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
7. Machine Head - The Burning Red
The first 2 'proper metal' albums I owned. Machine Head was given me to me by Ben Burden. Cheers Neb! It was like 'this is really heavy...and really good!!!' And I still remember going and buying that Metallica album. Love of thrash metal starting right there. Anyone wondering why I was going so mental when Metallica opened with 3 songs from this album at Reading last year...look no further!

8. Smashing Pumpkins - Greatest Hits
Heard some played at school and thought it sounded cool. This late rled to the obsession that I menmtioned in my 25 ways of the davo note...

9. The Cooper Temple Clause - See This Through And Leave
Dude at school gave me a copy of this along with stuff by Halo. Well halo are shit but this is cool and opened me up to more sounds and less traditional rock formats.

10. Deftones - White Pony
11. Korn - Self titled
12. Rammstein - Mutter (Alfie gave me a copy of this! I need to buy the actual album on day....)13. System Of A Down - Toxicity
Ok next phase - alternative metal! These are the 4 main albums I remmeber setting me off liking that whole thing. Being 17 was so fun....Oh and Deftones were my fave band for ahwile as well.

14. Sepultura - Roots
15. Fear Factory - Demanufacture
It's heavy as fuck and I loved it and still do

16. Tool - Aenima.
Yup, the one you were waiting for. Sure I had Lateralus and it was amazing. But upon purchasing and repeated listening to this TOOL became my fave band. An obessesion had begun. This pretty much influenced my whole life from then on.

And i'm still 17 at this point in the chonology and album 16 already. Oh dear....anyways pace quickens now...

17. Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
We all know how much I love Placebo. Got this album first.

18. Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
19. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Starting to like my music darker and Industrial at this point. Yup...that hint of goth is starting to creep in and i'm starting to discard those blue grunge jeans...

Bought alot of stuff from the last 3 bands and the previously mentioned now.

20. VNV Nation - Future Perfect
Right i'm 19 now. What the fuck. Dance music? That I like? First EBM album I got...started me in that whole direction liking all that stuff.

21. Icon of Coil - Serenity Is The Devil
22. Coveant - Northern Lights
Continuation of the EBM trend. Kinda mix buying ebm albums with some metal albums for a while now. I'm pretty set in my path so not so much influencial...

23. Lamb Of God - Ashes In the Wake
24. Judas Priest - Painkiller
These were 2 of the albums that set me back from buying EBM and stuff(so much) to buying more metal. Also Judas Priest really made me look more into old(er) school metal.

25. Slipknot - Self Titled
When I finally decided that in fact I really like Slipknot and was silly not listening to them...

26. Machine Head - The Blackening
Ok so been buying alot of stuff from wide range but this kicked me in the face and went 'oi you ya cunt fuck this ebm shit buy more metal untill your ears bleed'.

27. Snake River Conspiracy - Sonic Jihad
I may be on a massive metal kick in the past couple years, but this is a reminder that I do still really like Industrial.

28. Devildriver - The Last Kind Words
Holy fuck, give me more metal fuckers!

29. Testament - 3 Days Of Darkness
A reminder of the awesesomess of thrash.

30. Gojira - From Mars To Sirus
The most recent album on the list and one of the most jaw droppingly awesome!

25 ways of the Davo

1. I would describe myself as a Metaller.

2. My 10 favourite bands would be: Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, Rammstein, Gojira, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Machine Head, Judas Priest, Devildriver
To keep it themed and make it 25, add these as well: A Perfect Circle, Lamb Of God, Killing Miranda, London After Midnight, Slipknot, Korn, Snake River Conspiracy, Sepultura, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, System Of A Down, The Pixies, VNV Nation

3. I’m a Vegetarian and it fucks me off that I get so much abuse for it, as I never preach to meat eaters at all.

4. I like sci-fi a lot. Star Trek, Buffy, Firefly, Bablyon 5, Stargate….all awesome!

5. I’m really down at the moment because a lot of negative shit keeps happening in my life. I appreciate when people say I can talk about with them but I don’t want to keep talking about it, I want it to get better!

6. I didn’t bother with uni despite getting better a-level grades than most people I know. I’ve thought about it but it just doesn’t appeal.

7. I work in a newsagents. I’ve been in retail since I was 18 and it’s crap and boring and I hopefully will do something better in the future.

8. I want to go abroad more, I like seeing other countries and exploring them but haven’t done so enough.

9. I’m an atheist. I have immense dislike for organised religion.

10. I love going to rock/metal festivals and gigs. I’ve been to every single Download and 7 Readings. I’m happy to watch a band I like time and time again.

11. I fucking hate a lot of people….namely those who are disrespectful to others and get enjoyment from causing misery.

12. I vote Liberal Democrat.

13. I don’t have tattoo’s or piercing but I do actually like them on other people (particularly hot metal girls….), it just doesn’t make sense to me to get them done myself.

14. I didn’t really start finding my identity until I was 15/16ish and started hanging out with a different group of people and hearing music that didn’t suck for the first time….

15. There was a whole month when I was 17 when I literally listened to nothing but the Smashing Pumpkins. Then I went to Discord and Liam (for some reason) didn’t just play them all night…..

16. I started the huge bottle fight before Lamb Of God at Download 2007.

17. The first album I ever purchased was Rage Against the Machine’s self titled debut when I was 16.

18. I’m a part of TEAM SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. I want to own a metal shop selling CD’s and hoodies and stuff like that so I can spend my whole time at work air guitaring and talking about bands I love.

20. I fell out of love with football when I was about 17/18 and haven’t returned to it since. Crazy to think I loved it like every other kid when I was younger.

21. I think I’ve matured a lot in the past couple months in particular.

22. I read alot. Not so much at current but I’ve read crazy amounts in the past and will do again.

23. I don’t feel any pride at being English or British or whatever. I more consider myself European rather than either of those terms, because of all the nationalism associated with them. And yeah…I WANT the UK to join the Euro.

24. I’m a bit of a wanderer, I feel directionless a lot of the time

25. My friends are awesome.

LAMB OF GOD

Last week me and many of the Bath metal heads travelled to Bristol to go the Accademy to witness the Defenders Of The Faith 2 tour. Five Finger Death Punch, Unearth and Dimmu Borguoir were all pretty good. Then came the almighty Lamb Of God. They were fantastic. Really, really good gig. They performed very well and the setlist was pure genius!

Hourglass
Laid To Rest
Walk With Me In Hell
Pathetic
Set To Fail
Ruin
Descending
Something To Die For
Dead Seeds
Blacken The Cursed Sun
Omerta
Vigil
Contractor
Redneck
Black Label

Every song was a highlight really, but particuarly enjoyed the first 4, Descending followed by Now You've Got Soemthign To Die for and the closing salvo of Redneck and Blkack Label (and of course when they announced Black Label I ran straight into the middle screamign Wall OfDeath and throwing people to each side!)

The new stuff soudned really good, was a wicked night. Fuck yeah METAL! :D

Fucking fuck fuck fuck!

Long story short, I managed to lock myself out of work today which was a fucking nightmare. Empasis on the fuck and the ing and the nightmare. It was like an episode of Black Books but ACTULLY REALY AND HAPPENING TO ME! *WEEP Thankfully I found emmzy and she let me borrow her phone to get hold of Trev and eventually the shop was re-opened. Really stressed me out though. Argh. And Now I feel fuckign stupid and pissed off.

Buffy and my taste in girls....

I've been facing a battle lately, between Buffy and sleep. Buffy keeps winning. And i've noticed something. Given how much I loved Buffy when I was younger (alot...and I still do) it does explain alot about my taste in girls now. Like I have a thing for quite dominant women (buffy), tall and slender girls with dark hair (cordellia) and redheads (willow). And goths (Faith..sorta..but the dark hair and eyes especially). Yeah...explains alot....

Obama

Ok, so a US President I actually quite like? Huh? I thought Clinton was an ass and Bush was evil incarnate. The US pissed me off so much in the last few years, starting way back under Clinto when firing Cruise Missiles to take attention away from a story about some woman who sucke dhim off was the thign to do. But now we have Obama, and this means I now have warm fuzzy feelings towards thr President. Hell i'd even buy him a beer!

So a new era has begun. It's impressive. I was very negative about the hopes the world...people do keep electing idiots after all. I mean Merkel in Germany....Blair/Brown here in the UK...Sarkozy in France.....why do these people elect such people?!! But Obama is a decent guy and i'm actually very pelased with an election result for once.

So here to hope and change and all that.

Legalise Weed, Solve Economic Crisis.

Legalising weed will create 1000's more jobs. You need people to grow it. You need people to regulate it. You need people to transport it. You need secruity to protect growing sites. And you need people to sell it.

Then the government will earn much needed tax money from it. With the money being taken out of the black market and into government coffers, the wealfare state benifits.

And of course the major thing - the economy will be stimulated as people start spending again. Just think how the profits of restaurants, taweaways, supermarkets and newsagents will soar!!! People will buy food and shiny things at an incrediable rate. The economy will take off and move upward. Benifit to all.

So legalise weed, solve economic crisis. Fact.

AWESOME

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/07/porn-industry-seeks-federal-bailout/?iref=werecommend

''WASHINGTON (CNN) — Another major American industry is asking for
assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry
Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that
Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment
industry.
“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed
out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry
Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and
they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the
world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is
not for them to determine.”
Francis said in a statement that “the US
government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth,
just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the
American people."
“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today
to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this
$5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.
Flynt and Francis concede
the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the
past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.
But the industry leaders
said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually
active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation.
Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."
"With
all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest
thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite
of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry
and doing it quickly."
So far, there has been no congressional reaction to
the request.''

If anyone is deserving of taxpayers money, surely it has to be the porn industry!
